PROJECT TITLE:

Sheltered House Design and Construction Technology for Hurricane Vulnerable Zones in the Caribbean

  • COUNTRY OF IMPLEMENTATION:

    Haiti
    Haiti
  • SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Caribbean area has every year the presence of at least one major hurricane. The housing infrastructure is the first and most important sheltering solution. The design of a low cost, secure and sustainable solution for hurricane disaster management is studied based on the materials, technologies and conditions of two of the most hurricane impacted countries in Caribbean: Cuba and Haití. The Project then comprises a Sheltered Room Design enveloped by ordinary rooms that can be constructed in growing phases according to the needs of the inhabitants. The houses are built using selected technologies that are suitable for disaster mitigation situation. It is proposed then to create a training site on an affected zone on Pinar del Rio, Cuba and a prototype urbanization of 50 houses in Gonaïves, Haiti. This can lead to the solution replication on the Caribbean area and the use in Hurricane Disaster Mitigation Plans.

I am eager to see how this project progresses. There is such a great need for more robust housing in hurricane-prone areas - it is great to see work that addresses so urgent a problem.

Je crois qu'il faudrait aussi mettre en place des programmes d'éducation environnementale face à ce type de catastrophes qui sont malheureusement inévitables. En outre, il me semble vraiment incontournable la participation des citoyens dans la construction de ces maisons.
